I will be 44 when I graduate (2012). I cannot remember an exact moment when I decided to become a criminal defense attorney; although I'm sure my past experience as an officer had a big influence. I've experienced the same sort of tension with students in my class and have often thought that their lack of compassion or experience (whatever it may be) actually pushes me more towards criminal defense work as well. There are others that I am aware of who want to do criminal defense but they are not only few and far between, the topic seems to be hushed in general.

Maybe someday they will discover the gene responsible for our behavior. No doubt it will be linked closely to the masochist gene.

I have liked the tone and content of this site since I discovered it a month or so ago. Now, reading this latest post, I have a better understanding why. You and I clearly have a lot in common even apart from the fact that we are both criminal defense lawyers. I, for example, was 46 years old when I graduated from law school. And I had a similar epiphany that led to my decision to practice criminal defense. I look forward to reading the second part of this two-part post.
