Freedom Doesn’t Kill People

Freedom is a dangerous thing. Ask any fascistic despotic ruler. Free people tend to follow their own predilections; they tend to do what they want with their lives. Those who wish more control over the lives of others cannot tolerate this.

But as recent events in Tucson, Arizona have shown us, freedom has other consequences, as well. So it’s not just those who desire to impose their own will on others who are questioning freedom.

You Say You Want A Revolution

If It Saves Just One

The news since yesterday tells the story: Yet another DNA exoneration in Texas. That’s forty-one since 2001. Forty-one people who went to prison, even though they were innocent. Forty-one people who believed the system worked and would save them.

I’d like to ask you to do something with me: for one minute, I want you to sit there and think of what it would be like to be one of those forty-one people. Imagine being Cornelius Dupree Jr, who was just exonerated — less than a week after he made parole, thirty years after being convicted for a crime he knew he did not commit.

You don’t have to do what he did. You don’t have to serve the actual thirty years. You don’t have to actually experience what it was like. Just take one minute and try to imagine what it was like to be Mr. Dupree.

Blind Squirrels & A Policeman’s Gut

Over at Military Underdog, a site I just heard about recently, Eric Mayer posts a couple of Penn & Teller videos about the Criminal Justice System. Apparently, Penn & Teller have some kind of video series called “Bullshit.” (Insert Dave Barry here: “I’m not making this up.”)

Nothing, of course, goes together like our criminal “justice” system and bullshit.

The video, which is split into two parts, is amazing in a number of ways. If I could get people to watch just one video about the criminal justice system, these would be it.

Even so, the video only tells part of the story.
